Sexplora
(2021)
Sexplora is a campaign concept for a sex education pop-up. Unfortunately, up-to-date and accurate sex education is not available in many parts of the United States. Even schools that do implement sex education often only provide a sterile, heteronormative take on sex. Such an approach can feel alienating to students and fails to acknowledge important psychological aspects of sex such as pleasure, trust, and communication. Sexplora is designed to alleviate this issue by traveling to underfunded regions of the country where adolescents typically lack access to sufficient sex education and contraception. The pop-up gamifies the educational experience, constructing a more colloquial atmosphere around an otherwise uncomfortable discourse. Sexplora aims to provide a safe and informative space, using inclusive language (i.e "people with periods" instead of "women") and covering sex acts that pertain to all kinds of sexual orientations. The pop-up has an "Instagrammable" aesthetic and provides numerous photo opportunities throughout the course to gain publicity on social media. This marketing approach helps to draw the participation of more adolescents by framing the pop-up as a trendy recreational experience as opposed to a boring classroom lesson.
