Duped Textiles 2022
Duped textiles deals with notions of authenticity relating to the emergence of the “personal brand” or “branded identity” encouraged by influencer culture and the fashion industry. Specifically, it asks viewers to question how capitalism controls who can afford stamps of authenticity in the form of designer labels, monograms, or logos, and who must settle for dupes. The handmade imperfections that appear throughout each textile represent contrived efforts to achieve the prestige attached to wealth.
