Baking a Dagger to My Heart
(2019)
This photo series/performance examined sentimentality. Cakes served as metaphors for the effort and communication put into our relationships with others. Birthday cakes in particular, embodied the notion of giving and receiving messages from those close to us, even when those messages are hurtful. I spent hours baking these cakes. Throwing them off a parking structure was my rejection of the (real) hurtful messages inscribed on them. It was an act of self-preservation.
